Date: January 1, 1997<br \/>\n<br \/>Publisher: Harcourt Brace College Publishers; 9th edition<br \/>\n<br \/>(It appears that the latest edition is 11th.)<br \/>\n<\/font>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><!-- Start Book Contents --><\/p>\n<p>One of my kids is a good poet and I found myself not capable of appreciating her works.  <i>No matter, Dad, we can fix that.<\/i>  She told me to buy this book about <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.com\/syw\/entry\/perrine_s_sound_and_sense\">2 and half years ago<\/a>.   This is definitely a personal record of longest time to finish a book.  On average, it took me about 3 days to finish one page.<br \/>\nThrough those pages, I met Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, John Donne, and Linda Pastan.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"text-align: left; margin-left: 5em; margin-bottom: 2em\">\n<b>To A Daughter Leaving Home<\/b><\/p>\n<pre style=\"margin: 1em 2em auto; font-size: 10pt\">When I taught you\nat eight to ride\na bicycle, loping along\nbeside you\nas you wobbled away\non two round wheels,\nmy own mouth rounding\nin surprise when you pulled\nahead down the curved\npath of the park,\nI kept waiting\nfor the thud\nof your crash as I\nsprinted to catch up,\nwhile you grew\nsmaller, more breakable\nwith distance,\npumping, pumping\nfor your life, screaming\nwith laughter,\nthe hair flapping\nbehind you like a\nhandkerchief waving\ngoodbye.<\/pre>\n<p><i>Linda Pastan<\/i>\n<\/div>\n<p>\nIt turns out western poetry is much similar to Chinese.  Except that, like Haiku, Chinese poems are almost entirely of fixed forms with strict rules on meter and rythm.
